“The doctor prescribes: beauty”. Recorded on March 2, 2024 at Archivio di Stato di Modena (IT). I was performing live (solo) during this session based on Pre-Texts protocol. Thanks to Sara Uboldi. “The culture that supports the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, with geriatricians who in Carpi and Modena, together with the classic red prescriptions with drugs, compile “creative prescriptions”. We are at the forefront of experimentation between culture and health, within science but opening new frontiers…”

It’s a giant puzzle between memory, old manifestos, flyers and nearly broken hard-disks. Little by little I add what I find and remember. 1999

As Ulan Bator we were working on “EGO:ECHO” with Matteo Dainese after the original drummer Franck Lantignac left. Two demo sessions (see “OK:KO” release) in the spring and we did only two gigs, in july, in Italy, just to test some new songs. This happened right after a week of residence in Lyon at PezNer and right before we entered in studio with Michael Gira at Emme studio near Florence (IT).

1998

It was an “enormous” year of important concerts.

From Khan to Ulan Bator
Cambuzat/Manchion then Cambuzat/Manchion/Lantignac
No concerts, mainly building walls… After Franq left Miss Marvel we had a short “limbo” moment and then decided to move into a disused chalkmine and build inside our rehearsing studio (1993-99). We called it “La Guillotine” and recorded the three first albums of UB there. You’ll find some photos in the UB media area. One track of the “Khan” period (Tengri) was later released on “Ulaan Baatar” (1993-98 material). In late 1994 we met Gérard Nguyen of our future label Les Disques du Soleil et de l’Acier while in the same time Franck moved from Bordeaux to Paris and called us after reading our petite annonce “looking for a drummer!” we had left in a guitar shop in Pigalle. From that few months later was recorded and released the first UB album.

* An incredible night in a legendary squat, hosted by Lucrèce. Invited few days before we played last. With Flamin Demonics, Sister Iodine, Candle, Subtle Turnhips… Organized by Viviane Morrison (later of Heliogabale) with Hyacinth and Helter Skelter (Alligre fm)… ** Lee Ranaldo was there. Right after the event he left to Uk in a huge black tour bus together with Deity Guns to start the recording session of “Trans Lines Appointment” (released in 1993).

After Franq left we rehearsed together with Chuss on drums for some weeks. The song “Cheetah carnage” plus the basis of “Apt 18-A” were created then (later relased on the first UB album in 1995). What a name, ah! (suggested by Chris/Chuss, of course).

1989-90

Jim Squater, Young Bastards
Just one concert (1990?) in Rueil-Malmaison FR as Jim Squater: Cambuzat, Manchion and Fred the drummer. Few weeks later we recorded our first demo as Miss Marvel but Fred left soon after and was replaced by Franq de Quengo.
Right before we had this “Young Bastards” moment as a fourtet with Amaury on vocals, Seb Martel on guitar, me on bass and another Fred (of “Dentifrice”, a local band) on drums. it was really wild, very Stooges.

Busker
At that time I played often the acoustic guitars in the streets of the quartier latin together with Thierry Guérin (I knew him thanks to Seb Martel) who learned me lot of tricks. The repertoire was made of pure french songs but also some Beatles and Barrett/Floyd things. Great souvenir.
I played also a lot for children as I was very involved at that time with youth camp dedicated to those with “heavy families”.

1988

NB. We were 17 years old and these are our very first concerts (A. Cambuzat – guit, voc – , O. Manchion – bass – , Dominique Vellutini – key -, Ludovic François – drums -). A kind of local tour. We already played our own compositions. On June 21 we even performed twice because we won the afternoon contest, the prize being to peform again on the evening plus a lion peluche. Very cool 😀
