So the extra bit makes an unsigned int able to store bigger numbers. Nitpick: the OP's text said 0xFFFFFFF, not 0xFFFFFFFF. (One difference is that on a 32-bit-int implementation, the OP's text will become a signed int literal but yours will become an /unsigned/ Most people conventionally use Base10 (Decimal), which has ten numbers (0-9) before it rolls over- e.g. 7+3 = 10. how is it possible to form a binary -1 out of 0xFFFFFFFF? On a side note, 0x7fffffff would probably be a better generalcoice for infinity on most 32-bit machines. Typically int and long are both 32-bit on those systems. 0xffffffff 1 You are printing the current value of x.

It's only a big positive number(what it is supposed to represent given the context) if thesystem/program uses 32-bit unsigned ints. Use fewer linked lists.
